NOW – Yusuke Nakamura Art Book Review

NOW is a collection of illustrated art work by Yusuke Nakamura, a prolific artist who has created a huge body of art work for album covers, novels, magazines, anime and more. Some of the most well known titles he contributed to include album art work for the Japanese band Asian Kung-Fu Generation, the anime Tatami Galaxy and Solve The Mystery After Dinner.

This is his second art book, compiling about 250 pieces of his work done from 2008 to 2014. His first art book BLUE was published in 2009.

(above & below) One of Nakamura’s most commonly reused visual motifs is the profile view of a female subject, framed by a montage of props, animals and miscellaneous decorative objects. His strength lies in the impressive skill of merging what is often a haphazard and chaotic jumble of visual forms into colorful, energetic mise en scene.

Some of Yusuke Nakamura’s creations can be a little too jarring and noisy for my own taste, but more often than not the disparate elements come together nicely to create fantastic pieces of illustration. Recommended.
