This lovely volume collects the complete storyboards for Miyazaki Hayao’s Ghibli animated film Porco Rosso (Kurenai No Buta), fully illustrated by the director himself. The anime features two of Miyazaki’s much beloved subjects, WWI/II airplanes and pigs, the latter of which is the director’s favourite animal of choice when he draws self caricatures.
(above left/right) One of my favourite part of reading Miyazaki’s storyboards are the comedic sketches he draws beside the panels, often used to illustrate & provide additional direction/information for the animators working on the scene.
(above) The storyboards are incredibly detailed and expressive; you can get a very good idea of how the actual scene would play out in the film.
(above) At the end of the book is a section on how to read and interpret storyboards. The anime industry’s term for storyboards is 絵コンテ(pronounced “Eh-Kon-Te”) – meaning illustrated/picture continuity. (below) The book comes with a protective cardboard slipcase.
Also be sure to check out the official “Art Of” book for Porco Rosso.
