WXIII Patlabor The Movie 3 Art Book Review

Arguably the weakest entry in the three animated Patlabor feature films ever created, Patlabor The Movie 3 still contains enough “Patlabor” material to keep me interested, which is why I picked this up during my time in Tokyo earlier this year.

This art book ( one of three to be released for this film, I think ) contains more character, creature, mecha, vehicles and weapons design sheets than you can shake a stick at. Oddly enough, some settei materials from the OVA series are also included at the end of the book. The only thing missing from the book are color background art plates, something I find lacking in many of the Patlabor art books I own.

(above & below) The creature design for the monster in the film bears a somewhat similar resemblance to the mutated fish beast in Bong Joonho’s The Host film.

Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of the Patlabor films, with a wealth of settei material spanning over 250 pages. This art book has been out of print for a long time, but used copies can still be found on Amazon Japan and Amazon.com. If you are shopping around in Nakano Broadway and chance upon a copy, don’t miss it either. Recommended.
