The late anime director Kon Satoshi made only 4 feature films in his lifetime, and while I enjoy all of them immensely Millenium Actress is the one I call my favourite.
Japanese publishing house Fukkan is once again giving Kon Satoshi fans a huge treat with the release of this storyboard book for Millenium Actress, after previously releasing the storyboard books for Perfect Blue and Paprika.
(above & below) The first few pages of the storyboard book are the collection of movie posters ( illustrated by Kon Satoshi ) that appear in the film, all starring Chiyoko. These posters are also found in the rare out of print Art Of Millenium Actress book.
(above) The storyboards are divided into 4 chapters, A, B, C and one additional chapter for omitted shots. By comparison to the storyboards for Paprika, the drawings are not nearly as detailed here, but still much more detailed than your average storyboards used for production.
This is an excellent volume to appreciate the beautiful drawings of the late Kon Satoshi, as well as a great source of study and reference material on how he staged and composed his shots. I really hope the publisher Fukkan will also publish the storyboards for Tokyo Godfathers, thus completing the collection of all Kon’s work. My highest recommendations.
