Heidi, Girl Of The Alps (アルプスの少女ハイジ) is a 1974 anime series directed by Isao Takahata, based on the Swiss novel Heidi’s Years of Wandering and Learning by Johanna Spyri (1880). Despite its old age the series is still very popular in Japan, and the love for Heidi continues to draw many Japanese visitors to the Swiss Alps today.
This art book features the illustrations from the series by Kotabe Yoichi, who served as character designer / animation director on the film.
Besides Takahata and Kotabe, Numerous anime luminaries also worked on the show, including Toyoo Ashida (co-character design, animation director), Yoshiyuki Tomino (storyboard, screenplay), and Hayao Miyazaki (scene design, layout, screenplay).
(above) From L to R – Three of the creators of the series on their location hunt/research trip to the Swiss Alps, Miyazaki, Kotabe and Takahata.
A quaint classic that has withstood the test of time, Kotabe-san’s austere but beautiful watercolor illustrations are delightfully soothing to look at. Recommended.
